Exploration & Voyages in SoT

Ahoy ye salty sea dogs! In the last post, I spoke a bit about the different ships you can set sail in. I also provided some tips for the pirate beginner. In this post, I'll dive a little deeper into the rich world of Sea of Thieves.

With the sandbox nature of the game, your interactions with the world will be unpredictable and different. Will you join with other crews to form a makeshift armada or will you hunt for treasure by solving riddles with your crew? Maybe you'll play the role of a trader for the Merchant’s Alliance or perhaps your ship will proudly display the Jolly Rodger as it strikes fear into the hearts of others. No matter what path you choose, this game is an exhilarating roll of the dice.

Exploration

The world of Sea of Thieves is made up of three distinct areas, each with their own look and feel.

The Shores of Plenty – This area is your classic Pirates of the Caribbean setting. The ocean is a stunning array of blues and turquoise, and the islands have soft white beaches with palm trees swaying in the wind as red parrots fly from their branches. The water is also calmer than most other places, so it's a great spot to get to know your ship and crew. It isn’t all sun and games though. There are plenty of reefs and ship wrecks to keep an eye out for that can rip out the bottom of your ship if you’re not careful!

The Wilds – You’ll know when you sail into this area. As you approach this region, the skies will darken and become overcast, and the air will take on a darker, dirtier hue. The sea becomes choppier, and there are plenty of sharp and aggressive rocks to steer clear of. The islands reflect the sea and sky's somber tone. The plant life is withering away, and the abandoned boats provide an eerie foreshadowing.

The Ancient Isles – Think Indiana Jones, and you'll get a good feel for this adventurous destination. The islands are full of caverns, dense foliage (perfect for sneaking up on unsuspecting crews) and plenty of ruins of long gone civilizations.

Wreck diving

When you're not exploring the surf, you can check out the numerous ship wrecks. Surrounded by floating barrels or a flock of birds circling overhead, these wrecks are a great place to stock up on supplies and most importantly, they're often home to long forgotten treasure chests and ornaments. Hurray up, and add them to add to your loot before the ravenous sharks draw near! They often patrol these sites, hoping to find a gold-crazed sailor on his last breathe of air.

Voyages–Sea of Thieves attracts treasure-seeking pirates but it's also home to a sharp group of enterprising folk who are out to make a name for themselves.

There are 3 different trading companies that you can accept voyages from. As you complete quests with your crew, you level up with these companies, and in doing so, unlock higher level quests that will put your skills to the test! When you purchase a quest, you will need to vote on it in the captain’s quarters on the ship.

The Gold Hoarders – These shifty fellows send you and your crew out to find buried treasure. Some maps are simply marked with an X. Others have head-scratching riddles. Your ship's mid-deck map will help you find your destinations. You just need to look up the shape or name of the islands. Don't forget to relay directions to the crew member steering the ship!

The Order of Souls – These mysterious bucks deal in the arts of magic. They’ll ask you to seek and destroy evil pirate captains. Once you've defeated these wicked warriors, you’ll need to bring back their skull. It's not as creepy as it sounds, I assure you!

The Merchant Alliance – These savvy traders control trade. They have long lists of supplies that need delivering to select outposts by a certain time! You'll need to catch animals and find cargo and then deliver this haul while protecting them en route. Don't forget the deadline! You'll also need to keep your pigs fed and the snakes charmed so they can survive the voyage. And as always, you must protect your shipment from other pirates or shipwrecks!
