The hidden gem of the southeast, Charleston, SC, is ready to be your next destination for 2017. The airport is easy to navigate and we think you’ll find staying in Charleston to be more cost-effective than you’d expect for a beautiful, historic town on the beach. Here’s why you should visit Charleston, SC in 2017.
Charleston, SC because of the Architecture
Cobblestone Streets? Check. Charleston, SC is overflowing with compelling, exquisite, historic architecture. The number of classic Georgia, Federal, Adamesque, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victoria homes is unparalleled anywhere else in America. For a guided and insider tour try:
The Festival of Houses and Gardens
If you time your trip correctly in the spring for this event, you’ll be able to catch the most beautiful blooms in historical 18th century gardens plus the architecture and interiors of the homes that surround them.
The Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens
The Preservation Society of Charleston runs another tour of homes that goes through most of October, so it’s fairly easy to catch.
Drayton Hall
Drayton Hall is the oldest unchanged plantation home open to the public and the first fully executed example of Palladian architecture in North America. You know, if Palladian architecture is your thing.
Charleston, SC because of the History
For the history buff, Charleston is a given. You can’t get all that classic architecture without a little character in your past.
Old Slave Mart Museum
Much of that history is tragic and the Old Slave Mart Museum honors that as an actual old slave mart, staffed much of the time by individuals who can trace their history to Charleston slaves. While not entertaining for children, there is a lot to learn at this museum.
Charleston Music Hall
This venue was built in 1850 and was originally a train station! Now, it hosts some pretty great acts. Search for tickets at cheaptickets.com and you might even get some extra cash back!
Charleston, SC because of the Golf
While Charleston is home to the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, it’s fairly difficult to get a tee time at what is arguably the nicest course in the country and is home to a recent PGA Championship. There are several other beautiful courses, though. Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant is a great public course on the harbor with nice views of downtown. Dunes West nearby is also a nice option with nice scenery of the area. The Links at Stono Ferry is just south of downtown and provides a challenging 18-hole course recently voted the ‘South Carolina Course of the Year’. Use VRBO.com to find a great place on a vacation condo nearby your favorite course.
Because Charleston’s airport is large and international, it’s easy to get a flight (even a direct one!) right into the heart of it. You can easily book a flight through Expedia.com and save money with cashback. For all of these reasons, make Charleston, SC, your next destination for 2017!
